The Senior Editor is an editorial team lead – guiding and editing content produced by reporters and analysts covering the radical right in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project Department. The Senior Editor is part of the editing team that is responsible for helping the Intelligence Project team publish high-quality impactful investigative journalism, research reports, and multimedia.

The Senior Editor reports to and works in close partnership with the Managing Editor to:

  • determine story ideas and priorities,
  • ensure information is flowing properly across the department,
  • develop creative and new ways to tell stories, and
  • make sure all editorial protocols are being followed.

The Senior Editor directly supervises a small unit of editorial staff, but partners on content as assigned with reporters and analysts across the entire department to shape and edit their work.

The Senior Editor works closely with reporters and analysts to produce:

  • Hatewatch blogs;
  • Publications;
  • Extremist Files ;
  • Intelligence Report magazine articles ;
  • Other content, including multimedia content, as needed.

The Senior Editor is responsible for assisting the Managing Editor with:

  • coordinating staff;
  • managing the editorial schedule;
  • tracking stories from idea through publication, and
  • getting all assets for articles as assigned.

The successful candidate is a highly experienced investigative journalist and editor who is skilled at and enjoys working with both new and seasoned writers. The Senior Editor has a deep understanding of investigative reporting techniques including data analysis, document requests, and web scraping. Most importantly, the Senior Editor must be a team player.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Surface, shape, and edit Intelligence Project content for external publication;
  • Coordinate staff producing materials for online and print;
  • Review copy for accuracy, conversational writing and clarity;
  • Coordinate with internal partners to create excellent, audience-driven content for web and social media;
  • Assist team members in compiling documentation to facilitate ease of fact checking.

Qualifications –

Education and Related Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required;
  • A minimum of 7 years of investigative journalism experience with demonstrated results;
  • A minimum of 5 years of editing experience, including experience managing reporters;
  • Excellent research, writing and reporting skills;
  • Strong project management skills and experience, including experience working with external contractors and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines;
  • Strong ability to build trust and credibility with stakeholders across lines of difference;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment;
  • Commitment to develop and maintain sources;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative, receive constructive feedback and work autonomously;
  • Commitment to the values and mission of SPLC;

Other Special Considerations:

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
