Dear future Nuçi’s Space Team Member,

Thank you for your interest in working on behalf of Nuçi’s Space, located in Athens, GA. In 1999, the Phillips family formed the Nuçi Phillips Memorial Foundation in memory of their 22- year-old son and brother Nuçi, who in 1996 died by suicide after a long battle with major depression. Nuçi was a talented musician and a promising student at the University of Georgia. Having lived the course of Nuçi’s illness with him, the family recognized the need for obstacle free, user-friendly ways of treating and supporting those who suffer from depression and other such disorders. With a focus on Nuçi’s fellow musicians, the nonprofit Foundation created Nuçi’s Space. Nuçi’s mom, Linda Phillips, shares the story of his battle with depression, his suicide, and the founding of Nuçi’s Space in her 2016 book, “A Beautiful Here.”

I am very proud to have been a part of our journey since Linda hired me as the Executive Director in December 1999. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some incredibly talented people to further the mission and vision of Nuçi’s Space. We are currently in need of hiring two full-time, salaried positions. We are looking for someone to fulfill the existing role of Operations and Facilities Manager. We are also looking for someone to serve as our first Public Relations & Communications Coordinator. The responsibilities of this role have either been previously fulfilled by staff members or overlooked completely. Hopefully, the right person will see an opportunity to create something new and help us to grow as an organization and broaden our reach.

Although I have included job descriptions for the positions that are available, the most important aspects of a candidate’s “fit” at Nuçi’s Space are difficult to ascertain through a resume. Because of this, I’ve decided to write this letter to help describe the personal and professional characteristics of the candidate I hope to hire.

• Share a unique perspective that compliments our current strengths and counters our collective weaknesses.

• Possess the heart of a nonprofit entrepreneur and social justice advocate.

To be blunt, if you are simply looking for a job with paycheck, respectfully, this position is not for you. There will be days when you are emotionally and physically drained. You’ll feel underpaid. Unfortunately, you’ll eventually learn that we can’t save everyone, and we will lose people we love and care for. I feel it’s important to be transparent about the difficult parts of working with us, as well as the good. However, and I think my co-workers will agree, the rewarding days far outnumber the bad days. You will become an integral part of a team, that is much stronger together than the sum of its parts. You will be responsible for providing hope for someone who is lost in their own darkness. You will save a life. I will do my best to ensure that you feel supported, valued, and cherished.
