The CDC Foundation is seeking a Communications Director who is mission-driven and passionate about communicating the importance of health partnerships that save lives. The Communications Director oversees a variety of high-level communications aimed at increasing awareness about the essential role of the CDC Foundation in extending the lifesaving work of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through philanthropic and private sector partnerships.

In collaboration with the Vice President for Communications and Associate Vice President for Communications, the Communications Director will help set the communications strategy and goals for the CDC Foundation. The Director will work with team members and outside consultants to define, deliver and monitor messaging, strategy and media for a variety of audiences. In this work, the Communications Director will collaborate closely with the CDC Foundation’s executive team, communications leaders at CDC and partners to achieve key goals and objectives.

The Communications Director will report to the Vice President for Communications. This position involves considerable interaction and collaboration with external partners, including CDC leaders, philanthropic and corporate partners, CDC Foundation donors and media.

1.Develop strategic communications plans for specific CDC Foundation initiatives that integrate with broader communications objectives and organizational goals.
2.Responsible for developing products and directing activities, including communications plans, op-eds, blog posts, stories, meeting and speaking invitations, traditional and social media activities and online communications products. Identify opportunities to integrate key messages and objectives across CDC Foundation communication materials and speaking engagements.
3.Work to manage relationships with key media, including proactive pitching and outreach on key programmatic activities as well as responding to reporter questions and inquiries.
4.Maintain strong, interactive relationships with leadership at the CDC Foundation as well as communications leadership at CDC, partners and donors.
5.Manage timelines and budgets associated with projects for which this individual has responsibility. As required, manage productive and cost-effective relationships with public relations and design firms and strategic communications consultants.
6.Identify strategic speaking engagements for CDC and CDC Foundation leaders to deliver key messages to target audiences.
7.Serve as a liaison for programs, initiatives and events, and manage staff as required. Assume other duties as assigned.

•A minimum of 8-10 years senior level communication experience with a significant track record of success in managing major communications initiatives.
•Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field required.
•Demonstrated ability in developing and executing strategic communications plans for complex programs. Experience or background in promoting alliances between public and private sectors desired.
•Significant experience in project management, facilitating communications among multiple stakeholders, ensuring that deliverables and objectives match an established timeline and measuring overall success.
•Has effective relationships with influential media and considerable experience with both proactive and reactive media relations.
•Experience creating content for a variety of digital platform such as social media, blogs, video and podcasts.
•Expertise in creating integrated communications plans that involve traditional media relations, social media, video, direct mail communications, etc.
•High level of creativity and experience developing messaging for fundraising and communicating the impact of mission-based work.
•Experienced and comfortable serving as an advisor to senior leadership on communications issues.
•Excellent writing, editing and speaking skills.
•Experience with meeting and event planning.
•Track record managing and leading staff.
•Ability and availability to travel as needed.
